Locknuts
These self-locking nuts are designed to resist loosening under vibration. They are fitted with a nylon insert which is slightly smaller than the screw diameter, this insert then deforms around the thread if the screw, increasing the friction between the two components. It is considered bad bad engineering practice to reuse these nuts & I would never suggest doing so on any safety critical application. In less critical locations, these nuts can be reused, provided they cannot be fully screwed into the bolt by hand (i.e. without the use of a spanner).
